My PhD project, Right2Health, takes an interdisciplinary approach (from communication science to linguistics) to explore how language barriers can be mitigated between migrant patients and healthcare providers. Specifically, the project aims to explore what communication strategies (ranging from language-accommodating communication strategies to instrumental communication strategies) migrant patients, their informal caregivers, and healthcare providers are using by interviewing them to observing them. In the final subproject, we aim to develop and evaluate a (digital) decision-aid that will enable joint, personalised and informed decision-making to aid all parties in deciding what combinations of communications strategies to use for fulfilling consultations of different aims. Ultimately, this project hopes to drive the Dutch healthcare system to offer more inclusive, participatory, and equitable care to everyone.
