Prof. Guda van Noort will temporarily succeed Prof. Antal van den Bosch as SGW domain chair and also as a member of NWO’s Executive Board, as Van den Bosch will be stepping down from his board and domain positions at NWO this summer.
Van Noort obtained her PhD from VU University Amsterdam in 2008. Since then, she has worked as a lecturer and researcher in the field of persuasive communication at the University of Amsterdam. In 2019, she was appointed Professor and has since held the Chair in Persuasion & New Media Technologies at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research at the University of Amsterdam. In this role, Van Noort conducts research into the unique characteristics of new digital media and their role in the persuasive power of (marketing) communication, as well as being the Chair of the UvA-wide sector plan theme Digital Citizenship.
Van Noort studies both opportunities and risks, including potential harm to consumers, and develops insights into consumer resilience in an increasingly digital and synthetic society. One of her recent areas of focus within this field is investigating how algorithms work.
In addition to her work as a professor, Van Noort has served as director of the Foundation for Scientific Research into Commercial Communication and is a member of the supervisory board of the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets. Van Noort has been actively involved with NWO since 2023 as a member and vice-chair of the SGW domain board. Van Noort will combine the interim chairmanship with her duties at the University of Amsterdam.
NWO is convinced that Guda van Noort is the right person to fulfil this interim role. She has a broad academic and administrative profile, knows NWO well and is actively committed to interdisciplinary research and transdisciplinary collaboration.
'The world of science and NWO are undergoing significant change. It is both a responsibility and a privilege to serve as NWO’s interim chair during this phase. Together with the staff involved and members of the domain board, I am committed to ensuring continuity and stability, so that NWO can continue to fulfil its mission – enabling excellent science of great societal significance – without interruption. I would also like to express my great appreciation for Antal, who has fulfilled his role with great dedication.'
The NWO Executive Board is NWO’s highest governing body. It consists of the President, the Vice President (who is also the portfolio holder of business operations and finance,), and the four chairs of the NWO domains. They are appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture and Science on the recommendation of the Supervisory Board. The President and Vice President are appointed for a term of five years. The other members, who are also chairs of a domain board, are appointed for three years. Guda van Noort will represent the SGW domain on the Executive Board, as interim acting chair of this domain board.
