Research ethics is an important part of maintaining trust in knowledge generation, and protecting the safety, dignity, and rights of research participants. To safeguard our ethical principles, the ASCoR Ethics Review Board (ERB) provides expert support to all ASCoR researchers. This includes providing feedback on research plans, developing policies regarding research ethics, and providing ad-hoc guidance to ASCoR researchers.
ASCoR researchers are expected to maintain high standards of research integrity throughout the research process. ASCoR has a range of policies and procedures in place to support this expectation including internal review and approval of research projects before beginning data collection, assessments of collaborations with external third parties, standardized archival procedures for all research data, and actively encouraging the adoption of open science principles.
All ASCoR processes and procedures are also in line with the ethical code of The National Ethics Council for Social and Behavioural Sciences (NETHICS), and researchers are expected to comply with the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.
Gathering and analysing data is an integral aspect of conducting communications research. ASCoR researchers make use of a wide variety of data ranging from publicly available communications data, through to more sensitive personal data, such as audio/video recordings of participants. Promoting appropriate collection, storage, and general handling of all our research data is a priority for ASCoR. Our Data Steward team works with ASCoR researchers to understand the data privacy needs of each project and ensure that all research within the institute complies with overarching data privacy legislation (e.g. GDPR).
