I am an Assistant Professor of Political Communication and Journalism at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), University of Amsterdam. I hold a PhD in communication science from the University of Mainz (2016) and completed a Postdoc at the University of Landau. I have been a visiting scholar at the Cornell University (NY, USA) and at the University of Bern (Switzerland).
In my research I focus on:
Governing Under Fire: A National Survey on Violence Against Politicians (August 2026 - today)
Political violence has become an urgent concern worldwide, with politicians facing increasing levels of toxicity, harassment and intimidation. Offences range from online insults and property damage to explicit threats and, in the most severe cases, physical attacks. The Netherlands are no exception to these global trends. The project turns to those who are directly affected but hardly asked for their experiences. A large-scale quantitative survey with Dutch politicians will address gaps in research on the scope and nature of political violence and provide a nuanced picture of WHO is attacked in WHAT WAYS and with WHAT EFFECTS.

‘That’s (not) appropriate’ – Examining the Impact and Consequences of Social Norms on Voters’ Acceptance of Negative Campaigning (April 2023 - today)
While considerable research exists on the causes and consequences of attacks politics, the perceptual dynamics of negative campaigning remain largely under-investigated. Is negative campaigning becoming the "new normal"? This project investigates the social norms driving citizen tolerance of aggressive political rhetoric. Across four countries--the Netherlands, Germany, the USA, and Japan--our research shows that acceptance of negative campaigning is socially constructed, culturally bounded, and dynamically evolves as a campaign unfolds.

TWON-Developing a twin of an online social network (2023-2026)
Together with our European partners, we are developing a social network structure and investigating the effects of social network architecture on discourse dynamics and debate quality. https://www.twon-project.eu/

Negative campaigning in German election campaigns: measurement, dynamics and determinants (2021-2025)
What drives candidates to 'go negative'? Supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), this project conducts candidate surveys to investigate the drivers of negative campaigning in German state elections (with Jürgen Maier (RPTU) and Sebastian Stier (U Mannheim/Gesis), https://ltw-befragung.netlify.app/people).
