  • Profile

Cynthia Dekker is a postdoctoral researcher in the Youth & Media Entertainment program group at the University of Amsterdam (ASCoR), working on the VIDI project led by Susanne Baumgartner. Her research focuses on the effects of digital media on youth and examines why widely perceived negative effects are often not supported by scientific evidence.

Her PhD project (2022-2025) examined how the deep integration of smartphones into our everyday lives impacts individuals’ daily functioning and (digital) well-being, with a particular focus on the role of specific design features such as notifications. Before starting her PhD, Cynthia studied Philosophy (BA, Leiden University) and Communication Science (BSc & MSc Research, University of Amsterdam).
