Mark Boukes (PhD, 2015) is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. His research examines the sustainability of journalism in times of digitalization, mistrust, polarization, and economic pressures. He has a strong interest in the broader media ecosystem, particularly how news production and consumption shape democratic life. His work covers various a variety of phenomena, such as global media trust, pluralism, infotainment (especially political satire), economic news, media effects, public opinion, and online citizen engagement.
Boukes is the principal investigator of the World Values Survey in the Netherlands and has extensive expertise with experiments, survey research, content analysis, and computational social science. He has taught and coordinated courses including “Journalism & The Media” and “Research Methods Tailored to the Thesis” for many years.
He is a member of the Amsterdam Young Academy and serves on the department’s Ethics Review Board. His scholarship has been recognized with multiple awards and prestigious research grants, including the International Communication Association’s "Early Career Scholar Award" (2022) and prestigious grants, such as NWO Veni, NWO Vidi, NWO XS.
Boukes collaborates closely with non-academic partners, such as the Dutch Media Authority (CvdM), the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ), and leading news organizations (DPG, Mediahuis).
