The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has been ranked best in the world for Communication Science & Media for the third year in a row. The UvA ranks among the top 100 worldwide in 27 out of the 47 subject areas measured in the 2020 QS World University Rankings.
Dentistry also maintained its top position this year, again ranked 2nd in the world. There are also top 20 positions for Sociology, Linguistics, Development Studies, Geography, Anthropology, and Library & Information Management. Sociology is in 10th place, Psychology in 15th, Linguistics in 16th, Development Studies in 17th and Geography in 18th place. Anthropology and Library & Information Management are both at 19.
Various other UvA subject areas also reached the top 50 in the QS Ranking: Politics & International Studies (26) , Social Policy & Administration (28), Medicine (30), Law (34), History (36), Philosophy (40), English Language & Literature (43), Computer Science & Information Systems (45), Modern Languages (49), Physics & Astronomy (50).
Outside the top 50, universities are ranked by group instead of individually. The UvA subject areas listed in the group 51-100 are: Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Accounting & Finance, Business & Management Studies, Economics & Econometrics, Education, and Statistics & Operational Research.
QS ranks subject areas on the basis of four criteria: employer reputation, academic reputation, citations and H-index. The latter criterion links the impact (number of citations) to the scope (number of publications) of a researcher’s work.
QS published their university-wide World University Rankings on 19 June 2019, in which the UvA placed 64th.
