There are two options for applying to the ASCoR PhD Program. These are:
Option 1: Applying to an advertized project
Every year a number of specific PhD research projects are advertized. These projects come with a stipend or salary, and a tuition waiver. Vacancies are published on our website (see vacancies), on the website of the University of Amsterdam, and in national newspapers.
Option 2: Submitting your own research proposal
Since the number of advertized vacancies and tuition waivers is limited, ASCoR also admits the exceptionally interesting student into the program on the basis of his/her own research proposal. The proposal should be relevant to at least one of ASCoR's Program Groups, and this should be stated explicitly in the proposal. You are expected to show that personal funds are available to cover living expenses for four years.
Please keep in mind that students submitting their own research proposal are not eligible for a stipend or any other form of funding from ASCoR.
A complete application includes the following documents in English:
- An application letter, showing your motivation for a PhD project (maximum two pages A4).
- NB: Indicate clearly whether you are applying for an advertized position or are submitting your own research proposal.
- If you are applying on the basis of your own research proposal (Option 2 above):
- Submit your research proposal.
- Indicate how your living expenses will be funded.
- Indicate which program group(s) your proposal relates to.
- A curriculum vitae
- Evidence of your MA degree (including transcripts showing the courses taken and grades received)
- A copy of your MA thesis or another academic writing sample, such as a journal article or an essay (not co-authored).
